Battle of Selma Reenactment to Commemorate 146th Anniversary
"Mayor Calls for Reinforcements to Protect Selma"
The Battle of Selma Civil War Reenactment will take place April 28, 29, 30 and May 1. This year's living history will mark the 146th anniversary of one of the last Civil War battles.
The Confederate Naval Ordnance Works, Iron Clad Shipyard and Army Arsenal located in Selma were key targets for Union General James H. Wilson. Destruction of the Selma facilities in April 1865 would ultimately seal the fate for the CSA war effort.
Since 1987 the Battle of Selma Reenactment has been a major contributor to the area's tourism economy. City of Selma Mayor George P. Evans said recently "I know the Battle of Selma is in good hands under your leadership of the newly created April 1865 Society, Inc. Battle of Selma Re-enactment Authority. I support your efforts to grow this event in the years to come. Please keep me informed of your organization's plans for next year's Battle of Selma and any assistance you may need from my office. Please express my gratitude to all those who helped make this Battle of Selma such an outstanding tourist attraction for our City."
This event will be conducted annually and this year it will be hosted by the 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment, 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment, Selma's own Jeff Davis Artillery and the Alabama Division of Re-enactors, Inc.
